Creating Outlook Express Filtering Rules

Microsoft Outlook Express Instructions for Writing Message Handling Rules

1. Open the Outlook Express mail client.

2. Open the "Tools" menu, move the selection to "Message Rules" and from the sub-menu that opens, select "Mail". The following New Mail Rule window opens:

3. In the section labeled "1. Select the Conditions for your rule:" use the mouse pointer to click in the box to the left of "Where the Subject line contains specific words"

4. In the section labeled "2. Select the Actions for your rule:" use your mouse pointer to click the box to the left of "Move it to the specified folder"

5. In the section labeled "3. Rule Description (click an underlined value to edit it):" use your mouse pointer to click on the words, "contains specific words"

6. In the box labeled "Type specific words or a phrase, and click Add", type "XS:" without the enclosing quotation marks:

7. Move it to "Suspected Spam" Folder:

8. Click the "OK" button, and you will be returned to the New Mail Rule window.

9. In the section labeled "4. Name of the rule:" delete the text that is in the box and type the words, "Delete spam":

10. Click the "OK" button, and the Message Rules window will open, showing your new "Suspected spam" rule in the upper box, and the rule description in the lower box:

11. Click the "OK" button to close the Message Rules window and to return to the Outlook Express main window.
